Russian belongs to the Indo-European family of languages. Within the Slavic language group, it is one of the living members of the East Slavic group; Ukrainian and Belarusian are the other two living members. There have been written examples of the East Slavonic language from the 10th century onwards. While it preserves most East Slavonic synthetic-inflexional structure as well as a Common Slavonic word base, the modern Russian language exhibits a huge stock of borrowed international vocabulary for science, technology, and politics.
